Is money important for living life?

Is money important for living life?
Yes.

But is that the only thing important in life? Definitely No.

For better or for worse, human society has evolved and has reached a level of organization and structure where we can perform useful work ourselves, and in return we can reap the benefits of the work of others. The way we do this is through money. We do our job, get paid, and use that money to live our life. Human beings have several basic requirements such as food, shelter and clothing that in the modern world can only be satisfied with money. The more money we have, the better our basic conditions of living will be. But the influence of money only goes so far. To truly be living our lives we need to perform tasks to attain personal goals and achievements.

Say you are a person who likes to surf at the beach. You have a perfect, but expensive holiday destination in mind to do this. But you are unable to do so as you work day after day, week after week to build up your bank balance so that you afford the holiday. By the time you get there, it might be too late. Now if you had a better wage, you would be able to afford that holiday easily. That is an example of money helping you satisfy your personal goals.

But if you dropped your goals a bit and decided to go for a less expensive destination, you would have been still happy, albeit not as much as being in your dream destination, but definitely better than not going on a holiday at all. That is an example of the need to achieve happiness in life superseding the need to make money.

In this world of urbanization and booming economies, the need to have a decent earnings is a must to meet the basic requirements of life. However, I feel that many of us get entangled in work so much so that we lose sight of why we work in the first place. We don’t stay in overtime and sweat our heads off because we like to do so. We do it to earn money, and we earn money to improve our lives and seek happiness. So while having more money is a good thing, if doing so costs you opportunities to spend it and enjoy life, you are definitely not doing it right.
